Abstract
Alginate has numerous applications in the area of biomaterial science and drug delivery. This chapter presents a review on recent advances in the field of alginate-based drug delivery system, other biomedical applications of alginate, and its structural and general characteristics. The important features of the alginate for its numerous applications include biocompatibility, nontoxicity, gel forming, stabilizing properties, and easy modification techniques. The extraction conditions such as temperature and pH have an important impact on alginate physicochemical properties. Drug delivery is a pharmaceutical aspect of chemical engineering involving the release of therapeutically active agents into the body. An optimal drug dose is administered to a body in order to treat an illness or to control the present condition in an appropriate way. The potential applications of alginates as vehicles in drug delivery systems have opened a new horizon in research. It is the three-dimensional structure of alginate which provides a favorable environment for encapsulating various types of drugs. All advantages of alginate make it useful for various biomedical applications.
