Abstract

This chapter provides a concise discussion on methods and technologies for the recycling of waste batteries, which is a fast becoming subject in today’s world. To begin with, batteries’ role in our daily life and their evolution technology have been introduced and then different types of batteries, and their applications are explained briefly. Later, the purpose of spent battery recycling from both environmental and economical views has been defined. Recently, great efforts are being made for managing waste batteries and producing new batteries from their waste as secondary sources. This chapter aims to review pre-treatment and recovery methods required for the recycling of various types of discarded batteries to obtain high metal recovery. Physical, thermal, and chemical pre-treatments depending on further recovery processes are described comprehensively. Afterward, the most frequent pyro- and hydrometallurgical methods have been introduced for different battery recycling and compared explicitly. In the end, the chapter discusses advanced recycling technologies and the challenges and opportunities that exist in this area.
