Abstract

This chapter reviews the progress of our understanding on stem cells and their forward path to applications in tissue engineering. The various challenges in regenerative medicine such as growth, differentiation, and regeneration of cells have been discussed in detail. The advantages of nanotechnology led scaffolds for providing the ideal platform for tissue engineering are discussed in the background of vast knowledge available on the various types of nanostructures available. The focus of the chapter has been toward highlighting the potential advantage of biopolymeric nanocarriers for stem cells and stem cell differentiating agents leading to better tissue engineering, more so in directing differentiation toward specific cell lineages. The biocompatibility, biodegradability, and other features of polysaccharides have led to their extensive applications in tissue engineering including the development of electrospun and bioprinted scaffolds. Nanotechnology thus holds a great promise in tissue engineering with the way forward being in the areas of reproducibility and repeatability.
