Abstract

Water acts as the main source for any type of industry for producing the product and urban areas for living and other daily uses. Improper irrigation system in agriculture acts as a primary driver for the depletion of groundwater worldwide. Solar still is an environment-friendly attractive option to attain drinkable water from available saline/contaminated water and can be successfully used at industrially and domestic level. Due to the heat storage effect of evacuated tube collector (ETC), solar still coupled with ETC becomes capable in providing distilled water in off-sunshine hours also. The main objective of this paper is to review the different active single slope single basin solar still with ETC developed by the number of researchers and made an excel program for the economic analysis. Experiments result revealed that higher annual productivity of 1924 l/m2 is found in a solar still with internal reflectors using ultrasonic humidifiers, PCM and ETC, while lower annual productivity found in EISS system of 642.72 l/m2. Solar still using natural convection with a heat exchanger has lowest CPL of 0.0106 $/l, whereas the highest CPL of 0.1542 $/l found in solar still using forced mode without heat exchanger.
