Handbook of Oxidative Stress in Cancer: Mechanistic Aspects

Abstract

Cancer is characterized by the uncontrolled abnormal proliferation of cells; it can be caused due to various reasons and one of the reasons is the continued oxidative stress which in turn is responsible for the early start and development of various types of cancers. It is the second most disease that causes death. So, it has been a great concern in accurate and early-stage detection to start effective treatment as soon as possible. Oxidative stress biomarkers in cancer are important in the detection of the disease state. Hence, in recent times research on the identification of oxidative stress biomarkers is increasing very rapidly. There are different omics-based approaches available that include genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics for the identification of noninvasive and reliable biomarkers. Due to the large diversity in the oxidative stress of different diseases and conditions, it is very important to take into account when selecting the correct biomarker. The recent advances in various mass spectrometry-based analytical platforms are helping in the detection of all biomarkers even if they are in very low concentration in the clinical sample. However, liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and capillary electrophoresis coupled with mass spectrometry (CE-MS) are showing the leading applicability in the identification of protein- and metabolite-related biomarkers. This chapter provides detailed information on different biomarkers involved in various types of cancers, different omics approaches, and the advanced analytical platforms used for the identification of those biomarkers. It also provides detailed information on challenges being faced during the identification of biomarkers.
