Abstract
To mitigate climate change and control air pollution, the global energy system transformation from fossil fuel to renewable energy is inevitable. The share of renewable energy in global total final energy consumption has witnessed continuous growth in recent years, and the net-zero emission commitments proposed by a number of countries are expected to accelerate the energy conversion from fossil fuel to renewable energy. This chapter summarizes the overall global progress of renewable energy development. Systematic reviews of individual renewable energy types including wind energy, solar photovoltaic energy, hydropower energy, bioenergy, geothermal energy, concentrating solar thermal energy, and ocean energy are provided in terms of resource potential distribution, current deployment status, technology types, and future development trends. Electricity generation is currently the mainstream deployment form of renewable energy. However, in a renewable-powered future, the integration of high proportion of renewable energy into the electricity power system is severely challenged by its inherent variability and uncertainty. Technology measures to facilitate high-level renewable energy integration from the supply side, the transmission side, and the demand side are analyzed in this chapter. The coupling strategies between renewable electricity and electrification of end-use sectors including transportation sector, the heating and cooling sector, and the industry sector are also summarized. At last, this chapter systematically combed policies to support renewable energy development from the perspective of various end-use sectors.
