Abstract

The long operation time and complexity of esophageal cancer surgery and patient malnutrition all contribute to the higher incidence of postoperative complications.

Complications may happen during or after esophageal cancer surgery. Generally, the intraoperative complications include bleeding, RLN injury, and tracheobronchial laceration; the postoperative complications include pulmonary infection, esophagogastric anastomotic leak, anastomotic stenosis, etc. Esophagogastric anastomotic leak is one of the most commonly seen severe complications of the thoracoscopic-laparoscopic esophagectomy and a major cause of death after surgery.

The prevention and treatment of perioperative complications are particularly important for thoracoscopic esophagectomy as a new technique. Frequent occurrence of complications will undermine the confidence of doctors and the trust of patients and consequently restrict the development of this new technique.
