Abstract

The field of bioethics has incorporated the theory and principles of moral philosophy and has become adept at dealing with cases. However, practitioners of bioethics are often unfamiliar with the standard arguments or “commonplaces” associated with ethical discourse, such as arguments about “finality,” “intention,” “free will,” etc. These commonplaces underlie many of the current problems of bioethics, and bioethicists should acquire mastery of them.
