Abstract
Paul Stäckel nait en 1862 à Berlin dans une famille d’enseignants. Après des études secondaires, il commence des études de mathématiques à l’Université de Berlin en se destinant à devenir enseignant dans le secondaire. Il soutient en 1885 une thèse de mécanique, Ueber die Bewegung eines Punktes auf einer Fläche, en étant accompagné par Kronecker et Weingarten 1. Stäckel commence alors une carrière d’enseignant dans un lycée berlinois et soutient en 1891 à Halle une habilitation, Ueber die Integration der Hamilton-Jacobi’schen Differentialgleichung mittels Separation der Variabeln 2, qui lui ouvre les portes de l’Université. Stäckel obtient successivement des positions dans les universités de Halle (1891-1895), Königsberg (1895-1897), Kiel (1897-1905), Hannovre (1905-1908), Karlsruhe (1908-1912) et Heidelberg (1912-1919). Il décède à Heidelberg en 1919.
