Abstract

The ability to process haptic, proprioceptive, and tactile stimuli can be trained due to the neuronal plasticity of the human central nervous system. Plasticity, in the neuroscientific sense, describes the ability of the central nervous system to adapt to changing environmental conditions and requirements. Accordingly, the performance of the haptic system can be improved by suitable training, similarly to motor training processes.

This chapter contains sensory training of healthy adults, proprioception and balance training in older age, sensory rehabilitation after stroke, neuropsychological tests and trainings for education and clinical use, and propaedeutic considerations for education of clinical examinations and hands-on therapy.
