Zusammenfassung
Die Elektrokonvulsionstherapie (EKT) ist ein modernes, sicheres, nebenwirkungsarmes, hocheffektives und leitliniengerechtes Therapieverfahren zur Behandlung depressiver Syndrome. Entsprechend der S3-Leitlinien ist eine Indikation zur Behandlung therapieresistenter unipolarer und bipolarer depressiver Episoden mit hohem Evidenz- und Empfehlungsgrad gegeben. Bei gleichzeitig sehr hohen Effektstärken bzw. Responseraten sind kognitive Nebenwirkungen reversibel und schwere somatische Nebenwirkungen sehr selten. Die EKT wird insgesamt in Deutschland zu zurückhaltend und nicht leitlinienentsprechend eingesetzt, insbesondere bei älteren Patienten.
