Percutaneous Penetration Enhancers Physical Methods in Penetration Enhancement

Abstract

Transdermal iontophoresis enables hydrophilic, charged, or neutral molecules to be administered through the skin in an effective, noninvasive, patient-friendly manner. This chapter presents the basic concepts, mechanisms, and an analysis of electrotransport across the skin as a function of (i) electrical parameters, such as current density; (ii) formulation parameters, such as the influence of drug concentration, pH, and the presence of competing ions; and (iii) the delivery system.
