Abstract

The increase in the population will cause substantial food shortages, which must be quickly resolved. Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae contain the important crops utilized by both the fresh vegetable and food processing industries. So the yield and quality improvement of these crops are required to resolve the food shortage. Transformation technique, which is the primary used genetic engineering technique, is utilized to improve the critical trait for the yield and quality improvement, such as insect resistance, disease resistance, fruit setting, fruit size, shelf life, nutritional content, and sugar accumulation. In this chapter, we summarize the genetic engineering of important breeding traits in the Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae families.
