Zusammenfassung

Im Laufe der letzten Jahrzehnte hat bei der Bevölkerung der westlichen Industrienationen die mittlere Lebenserwartung (Lebenserwartung, die 50 % der Bevölkerung erreichen) stetig zugenommen. Für die im Jahr 2000 Geborenen wird nach neuesten Hochrechnungen ein Anstieg von 65 auf ca. 75 bis 80 Jahre erwartet. Diese Erhöhung ist unabhängig von einer Zunahme der maximalen Lebenserwartung (höchstes Alter, das jemals von einem Menschen erreicht wurde; ◘ Abb. 10.1), die derzeit bei etwa 122 Jahren liegt. Ursache dieser rasanten Entwicklung ist vor allem die permanente Verbesserung der medizinischen Betreuung sowie eine ausgewogenere Ernährung und eine intensivere gesundheitliche Aufklärung der Bevölkerung. Das damit geschaffene Gesundheitsbewusstsein trägt auch zu einem deutlichen Rückgang von Infektionskrankheiten bei.
