Die Symptomatik von angeborenen oder erworbenen Störungen der Harnstoffsynthese wird im Wesentlichen durch die Akkumulation der neurotoxischen Ammoniumionen bestimmt. Von den angeborenen Defekten im Aminosäurestoffwechsel kommt die Phenylketonurie am häufigsten vor.
