Abstract

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a molecular imaging modality used to evaluate a wide variety of neoplasms, particularly for staging, follow-up, therapy stratification, and monitoring. As PET imaging is based mainly on the physiological distribution of the administered radiotracer, the addition of computed tomography (CT) to PET allows for more accurate localization of PET findings as well as providing additional morphological information which may be complementary in lesion characterization. Furthermore, CT allows for the generation of highly accurate attenuation maps for PET attenuation correction, yielding a significant increase in image quality.
