Thomas J. Scheff ist emeritierter Professor für Soziologie an der University of California, Santa Barbara, und zählt zu denjenigen in der amerikanischen Soziologie, die in den späten 1970er und den 1980er Jahren die Beschäftigung mit dem Thema Emotionen auf die soziologische Tagesordnung gesetzt haben. Er hat eine Vielzahl von mikro- und makrosoziologischen Studien zur Rolle von Emotionen für Integrations- und Konfliktprozesse vorgelegt und beschäftigt sich insbesondere mit der – wie er sie nennt – master emotion der Scham.
