Zusammenfassung
»Eine Oper, das ist die Geschichte von einem Sopran und einem Tenor, die miteinander schlafen wollen, und von einem Bariton, der sie daran hindert.« Mit dieser satirisch zugespitzten Formulierung — René Leibowitz weist sie dem Schriftsteller und Musikkritiker George Bernard Shaw zu, gibt aber keinen Nachweis — lassen sich so gut wie alle Opern Verdis als Dreiecksgeschichten lesen. Verdi steht damit freilich nicht allein, denn in der Geschichte des melodramma wird die Handlung von Vincenzo Bellinis Il pirata (1827) bis hin zu Giacomo Puccinis La fanciulla del West (1910) und Il tabarro (1918) für fast ein Jahrhundert lang vom ›ewigen Dreieck‹ beherrscht.
