Abstract
This volume in the Springer Handbook of Auditory Research series discusses the anatomy of the auditory system with an emphasis on how the local connections of specific neurons within auditory structures control the processing of sound. The volume is dedicated to D. Kent Morest, a leader of neuroanatomical studies of the auditory system in the twentieth century who stressed the importance of the circuits connecting specific types of neurons in auditory processing. In this introductory chapter, a brief history of the field of functional neuroanatomy is provided and the contents of each chapter are summarized.
