Abstract

Challenging behavior is sometimes related to social skills deficits, especially in children with disabilities. This chapter explores that relationship and presents a number of strategies for targeting the challenging behavior by strengthening social skills. First, assessment for challenging behavior is reviewed. Then, social skills assessments are described, as well as strategies for selecting a particular assessment over the rest. Then interventions that address challenging behavior function directly are discussed, as well as those that target social skills deficits more generally. Finally, an instance in which social skills deficits are not necessarily related to challenging behavior is noted.
