Handbook of Social Behavior and Skills in Children

Abstract

This chapter explores the nature, assessment, and treatment of social impairments in children and adolescents with ADHD. Peer-related difficulties that are most prominent include peer victimization/bullying, lower friendship quality, peer rejection and reputation bias, comorbid conditions, and a lack of insight into their own social competence (positive illusory bias). The impact of gender, age, and the use of social media is also discussed. Best practices for assessing social behaviors in ADHD suggest a multi-method approach including rating scales, sociometric nominations, and observation. Further, information should be collected from multiple informants including parents, teachers, peers, and the individual. Despite the severity and chronicity of social impairment in ADHD, current intervention literature is limited with regard to evidence-based interventions that improve the social functioning of youth with ADHD. Interventions that target symptoms that might contribute to poor social relationships (e.g., poor attention, disruptive behavior) have not been shown to adequately address peer relationship deficits. Social skills training interventions have also shown limited success, potentially because children with ADHD have difficulty generalizing social skills, rather than a lack of knowledge of appropriate social behavior. In addition, peers’ perceptions are resistant to change, and, as such, it is likely that, for interventions to be successful in addressing social difficulties, peers should also be included. Preliminary investigations of interventions including parents and teachers have shown promising results in addressing the peer relationships of children with ADHD; further investigation is warranted, and little information exists regarding interventions for adolescents. Suggestions for future research are discussed.
