Handbook of Social Skills and Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to provide readers with some general themes of future research that would be valuable to individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, parents of individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, and professionals who work with individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Throughout numerous chapters within this book, the authors describe areas of future research as it applies to the topic of their chapter. Rather than rehash the areas of future research for specific interventions, assessments, or outcomes of engaging in social behavior, we are going to provide 11 large themes for the readers’ consideration. These themes are going to cover components that should be included within future research as well as the type of studies that would be beneficial to the treatment of autism spectrum disorder. This chapter should serve as a useful guide for any professional who wants to conduct research studies on social behavior as it relates to individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
