Abstract

This chapter aims to give a broad review of the recent empirical and theoretical literature concerning sexual orientation (SO) and gender identity (GI) in later life. Theoretical predictions have been tested and/or confirmed through attempts to apply theory to practice, where possible. This narrative literature review covers a range of fields and specialties including gerontology, sociology, psychology, economics, and health and social care research, found using a keyword search and snowball approaches of literature published in English. The research presented gives an overview of the current state of the art and introduces the most prevalent themes to date emerging from the body of literature. There follows a discussion concerning the conceptual and theoretical models and methodologies, including their practical application, which will lead into policy implications and suggestions for future research. The aim of the review was to aggregate scholarship that adds in some way to the world’s knowledge about gender identity and sexual orientation in later life.
