Textbook of Hernia

Abstract

The Lichtenstein tension-free hernioplasty is a technique of open, mesh-based inguinal hernia repair that does not place tissues under tension at the suture line, resulting in low recurrence rates. It can safely be performed without general anesthesia. This chapter describes the history and development of the Lichtenstein technique and details the operative steps and the modifications it has undergone since its inception. The current body of evidence is evaluated and the latest recommendations from the European Hernia Society are discussed. An understanding of Lichtenstein repair, as well as its advantages and disadvantages, will help surgeons optimize outcomes in the treatment of inguinal hernia.
