Abstract

The stratum corneum (SC) is the outermost surface layer of skin and therefore the first to be affected by external aggressions. Its quality is defined by a complex set of biological and physical parameters. This chapter deals with SC mechanical and tribological properties based on analysis of data on parameters like Young’s elastic modulus and friction coefficient. We review several studies focused on the stratum corneum in vitro with particular emphasis on the effect of important SC constituents, like lipids as well as water and moisturizers. We also give some examples of new experimental approaches that help to better understand the influence of surface properties of the SC on the overall sensorial perception of skin, especially with light gestures (low loads) whereby these aspects are enhanced.
