The Eye in Pediatric Systemic Disease

Abstract

Ocular manifestations are relatively common among children with rheumatic diseases. Many of these disorders may lead to vision loss and life-long disability if not detected and treated early. The ocular complications of JIA are well known by both ophthalmologists and pediatric specialists, yet the treatment of the associated chronic uveitis remains a challenge. Among the other childhood rheumatic diseases, a variety of ocular manifestations can occur including conjunctivitis, scleritis, keratoconjunctivitis sicca keratitis, various forms of uveitis, retinal vasculitis, optic neuritis, and rarely orbital disease. A team-based approach to screening, treatment and monitoring is recommended for children with these diseases. Close collaboration between the ophthalmologist, pediatric rheumatologist as well as other specialists is essential to maintain optimal visual function for these children.
