Dental Science for the Medical Professional

Abstract

Physicians are generally not well versed in the field of dentistry. Despite this, they are frequently consulted regarding prophylactic antibiotics or asked to evaluate patients for medical optimization prior to dental procedures with which they lack familiarity. When physicians are unknowledgeable of the procedure in question, antibiotics may be inappropriately prescribed. This chapter aims to update healthcare providers with evidence from the current literature on antibiotic indication and selection prior to dental procedures. In order to understand the appropriate spectrum of activity necessary for dental procedures, it is important to review the constituents of the oropharyngeal microbiome. The chapter will also familiarize medical practitioners on specific dental procedures to provide an understanding of what their patients will be undergoing and to better delineate which dental procedures are considered “invasive.”
