Abstract

Given the need to learn about strengths and shortcomings of coronateaching and homeschooling, we present a study that phenomenologically addresses the educational experience and psychosocial conditions during lockdown of 12 high school students belonging to the Mexican National Polytechnic Institute. Through semi-structured virtual interviews, these students narrated the experiences and challenges they encountered throughout their shift to virtual schooling during spring 2020. Having to adapt, students report experiencing novel academic stress due to the lack of organization, feedback, and guidance; unfamiliar learning strategies such as turning to videos or tutorials to maintain their high academic performance, as well as concern for their grades and a decreased level of subject comprehension and competence. Our findings highlight that students are motivated by their family and by the Polytechnic community to overcome structural obstacles and achieve their academic goals despite the hardships they have encountered.
