Abstract
Heritage is seen as a major component of quality of life, features that give a city its unique character and provide the sense of belonging that lies at the core of cultural identity. In other words, heritage by providing important social and psychological benefits enrich human life with meanings and emotions and raise quality of life as a key component of sustainability. This paper deals with the phenomena of the changes in the facades of heritage buildings which are subjected to distortion and loss, to conserve them because they are the important facet of our culture and identity. First, the paper presents the planning studies for the case study which is in the Northwest part of the old city center of Alexandria, Egypt. Next, deduce some analytical studies which will shed light on the current state of the case study. Then, conducting an architectural study for the heritage buildings in the case study in relation to the elements of the architecture in the external facade. Through these studies, we would be able to deduce that a lot of changes have occurred in these heritage buildings. Finally, the paper is ended by general results and recommendations which help us to control these changes and to stress the existing links between cultural heritage and sustainable development.
