Sustainable Urban Street Design in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Abstract

The streets in a city are important because they determine how people get about. Structures, people, vehicles, utilities, greenery, signs, furniture, and lighting are all accommodated. The emergence of compact and sustainable cities is largely attributable to the close relationship between urban design and sustainability, with streets constituting most of the public realm in most communities. Both cities and streets exist. Introducing sustainable urban streets can make cities more hospitable for residents. Sustainable streets are multimodal rights of way that are planned, built, and maintained to provide positive outcomes in the areas of transportation, ecology, and community as part of a larger sustainability agenda that prioritizes environmental protection, social justice, and economic vitality. This paper’s focus is on determining methods for incorporating sustainable design requirements into city roadways. This paper will argue for the improved sustainability of urban streets by providing a more general definition of sustainability. Taking into account and evaluating sustainable principles can help urban streets serve people, communities, the economy, and the environment in a more positive way. Using these guidelines for eco-friendly street planning, we’ll examine few streets as case studies in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Therefore, a complete street upgrade is unquestionably necessary to guarantee a good sustainable street design. The paper concludes with some suggestions for developing the main components of sustainable streets that are derived from the theoretical study in order to design a sustainable street for a livable community.
