PICCOLO: Observing and Coaching Caregiver-Child Interaction to Support Early Development in Children With and Without Disabilities

Abstract

This chapter focuses on the construct of parent-child interaction (PCI) as measured by the Parenting Interactions with Children: Checklist of Observations Linked to Outcomes (PICCOLO). PICCOLO was developed for practitioners but it has strong psychometric properties that make it a solid measure for use in assessment, basic research, and program evaluation. The process of identifying simple, reliable indicators of developmentally supportive PCI, where each indicator predicts positive child development outcomes, has resulted in a checklist of behaviors that families and practitioners easily understand and that can be reliably observed and successfully used in practice. These features—simple, reliable, and relevant—make the 29 items of the measure well suited to the process of coaching families where feedback can clearly focus on child development as an outcome of the parenting behavior. The practitioner as family coach can use the PICCOLO to easily identify parenting strengths and build on those. This chapter discusses the need for a PCI focus in prevention and intervention services and how PICCOLO can be used as a coaching tool. This process both supports and drives family-centered practices in home visiting interventions. The development of the PICCOLO tool and it’s use in research and evaluation are reviewed. Cross-cultural comparisons of PICCOLO are presented and find strong support for PICCOLO use both psychometrically and practically. The use of PICCOLO to build PCI in varied contexts further demonstrates PICCOLO’s utility. The chapter provides a cogent case for usefulness of the PICCOLO in research, evaluation, and practice.
