Abstract

The nose and paranasal sinuses are, literally and figuratively, central to our sense of well-being. A crooked nose, diseased and congested sinuses, and troublesome nosebleeds: any variety of pathology can adversely impact confidence, occupation, socialisation, exercise tolerance, mental health, and relationships amongst those more easily recognisable complex human functions. Understanding the subtle nuances of anatomy and anatomical variations can greatly influence the ability of a clinician to accurately diagnose and consequently treat effectively sinonasal diseases. In this chapter, the author gives a broad but concise description of surgically relevant anatomy of the nose and paranasal sinuses based on his clinical experience. The subject areas are by no means exhaustive but should give the reader a comprehensive account enabling safe and effective surgery to be planned and undertaken.
