About this book

This book provides a comprehensive technical and scientific overview of the surface modification of titanium dental implants. Coverage ranges from basic concepts of surface modification to advanced micro- and nano-engineering strategies employed to achieve augmented bioactivity to meet the needs of compromised patient conditions. A special focus of the book is advanced state-of-the-art electrochemically anodized nanostructures fabricated on implants towards enhanced bioactivity and local therapy.

Surface Modification of Titanium Dental Implants will keep you current in the domain of titanium dental implants and will provide an improved understanding of their performance and application. The book will benefit engineers, clinicians, and researchers in biomaterials, biomedical engineering, dental and bone implants, nano-engineering, and technology.

About the editor

Dr. Karan Gulati is a group leader at the School of Dentistry, The University of Queensland, Australia. His research group, GATORs (Group for Anodized Therapies for Osseointegration, Regeneration and Stimulation), aims to revolutionize dental implant technology by creating the next generation of implants capable of providing maximum local therapeutic action with selective bioactivity to drastically reduce implant failures. Dr. Gulati is supported by reputed research fellowships from NHMRC (National Health and Medical Research Council, Australia), JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Japan), and the University of Queensland (Australia). His research focuses on nano-engineered therapeutic titanium dental implants for enhanced soft- and hard-tissue integration and antibacterial functions. Before his current appointment at UQ, Dr. Gulati worked at the School of Dentistry and Oral Health, Griffith University, as a Research Fellow (2016-17), working in the area ofnano-engineered dental implants. He completed his Ph.D. in the domain of Nano-Engineered Bone Implants from the University of Adelaide in 2015 and was awarded the Dean’s Commendation for Doctoral Thesis Excellence. Dr. Gulati has over 12 years of research experience working with nano-engineered metal-based implants, implant nano-engineering, local drug delivery, bone/dental implants, and therapeutic/bioactive implant surface modification. Dr. Gulati has edited two books, published over 60 peer-reviewed journal articles and eight peer-reviewed conference publications, and presented over 90 times at national and international conferences.
