Normal Cytology

Abstract

This chapter covers the central nervous system (CNS), peripheral nervous system (PNS), and the eyes. Cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) is often sampled by lumbar puncture or ventricular catheter/shunt as a window into this system to assess for infection, immune disorders, or neoplasms. It is also standard procedure to prepare cytology smears during intraoperative consultations (IOC) in neuropathology. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is often used to target masses in the paraspinal region, which may capture normal PNS elements. It is now also common practice to perform FNA for ocular lesions. Awareness of the normal cytologic appearance of the nervous system will aid in IOC, CSF evaluation, and FNA interpretation of these tissues.
