Dysautonomia and Atopy in Pediatric Headache Patients

Pediatric Headache

Abstract

While pediatric headache is a common and often troublesome concern, in many cases, it is simply one part of the overarching concern or condition. While these patients are more prone to comorbid neurological and psychiatric conditions as discussed in the prior chapter, they are also more likely to have other general comorbidities that, in some cases, may go unrecognized and as such untreated for some time. Dysautonomia and atopy are two broad categories of conditions that are commonly seen with pediatric headache patients that often lead to frustrations, especially when not recognized as comorbidities, but also may lead to opportunity when considered as once these are recognized the treatment approach and options may change, yielding a more successful and satisfying outcome for all. In this chapter, the crossover between dysautonomia and atopy with headache in the pediatric population will be explored in attempts to help prevent a missed opportunity when thinking about the complete pediatric patient, rather than simply just a pediatric headache patient.
