Physiology of the Aging Nose and Geriatric Rhinitis

Nasal Physiology and Pathophysiology of Nasal Disorders

Abstract

Continuing demographic shifts make it important for rhinologists to understand how aging affects both normal nasal physiology and disease. There are several aspects of nasal function that change with age. These include changes to external nasal suprastructure as well as internal changes to the mucosal lining. Changes in vascular regulation and airflow also affect other critical functions of the nose such as conditioning of air and mucociliary transport. Rhinitis is a common condition in older patients and its etiology is poorly understood. Consideration of these physiological changes is important to implementing effective treatment of rhinitis in older patients. A number of therapies are useful for this condition, but special attention to fundamental principles of geriatric medicine is warranted to safely and effectively treat rhinitis in older patients.
