Bedside Pain Management Interventions

Abstract

This chapter outlines the clinical indications and uses of viscosupplementation in the treatment of osteoarthritis at the bedside. Viscosupplementation refers to the use of hyaluronic acid formulations as an injectable solution to treat intra-articular pain. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring polysaccharide found within the synovial fluid that has multiple functions including lubrication, “shock absorption”, anti-inflammation, and even analgesia. Intra-articular hyaluronic acid was first approved for human use in the United States in 1997 and since has gained significant notoriety as a conservative treatment option for knee osteoarthritis.
