Fad Diets Beyond the Western World

Fad Diets and Adolescents

Abstract

Fad diets among adolescents and young adults (AYA) are often thought to be phenomena of the Western World only. Contrary to this, these “trends” have been increasingly witnessed among AYA in the Eastern World over the past several years, and as such, nutrition-related morbidities have increased in these regions. Numerous socioecological determinants have contributed to this. In this chapter, we shed light on these determinants, which have been associated with the transition of dietary behaviors in the relatively conservative and/or traditional settings of many countries of the Eastern World, and describe some of the more common fad diets of these areas. An understanding of this is important for any adult working with AYA, so as to impart socioculturally empathetic and relevant care, nutritional screening, and counseling.
