Hospitalized Chronic Pain Patient

Abstract

Both tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are medications that were initially intended to treat mood disorders, but their utility has broadened to include treatment of various chronic and neuropathic pain conditions. Consequently, many patients with chronic pain are maintained on one of these medications as a part of their outpatient regimen, and the inpatient chronic pain consultant should be familiar with the management of these medications when chronic pain patients present as inpatients.
