Abstract

The chapter deals with the development of four natural hazards: volcanism, earthquakes, the most associated tsunami and slope mass movements and their damage and mitigation options. For each of these hazards is a sketch of how they occur, an explanation of their geographical location, a calculation of the intensity of their activity and an assessment of the magnitude of the human and financial damage caused. The analysis of the consequences also covers the social impact consequences. For each of the natural hazards analysed, the professional (e.g. forecasting, monitoring), technical and human (e.g. communication) tasks of mitigation are discussed in detail.
