Abstract
Herbicides are important tools for weed control, but both target and non-target plants are exposed to sublethal underdose composed in the field. Low herbicide doses can be used beneficially in plant growth and development. The stimulating effect of a low dose of a toxic substance is known as hormesis. The effect of hormesis is undesirable in situations where weeds are exposed to doses of hormonal herbicides, favoring their development and competition to the detriment of culture. Therefore, the importance of studies of this mechanism for professionals involved in weed management. Despite numerous theories about hormesis, few studies have evaluated its frequency, magnitude and distribution among plant chemicals. Herbicide hormesis is observed in cultivated plants and weeds, presenting several effects with potentials for exploitation in the production systems of crops of interest. However, more research on this phenomenon is needed, elucidating the negative and positive points and impacts on environmental toxicology. Therefore, this chapter brings the definition of hormesis, the hormetic dose–response of herbicides in cultivated plants and weeds and the mechanism of hormesis in the plant.
