Abstract
Process sustainability is a prime factor for generating a positive impact on revenue streams in a biobased industry. Seaweeds are no more considered important for only eco-services but are also getting projected as a useful resource. Thus, they have kindled a strong hope among the environmentalists and bioprocessing experts for use as a sustainable feedstock. Process technologies intended for edible extraction require a conscious effort to achieve safety, cost-effectivity, and sustainability. Polymeric chains of chemically diverse amino acids in proteins pose the greatest challenge for their production, and their complete solvent dissolution is a rate-limiting factor in industrial production. The biorefinery approach has revolutionized bioprocessing strategies. The sequential extraction of multiple products from feedstocks provides a remarkable improvement in product quality, waste management and life cycle analysis, ultimately adding to overall revenue generation. The current chapter presents a comprehensive analysis of seaweed-based biorefinery approach with a detailed discussion about the extraction of proteins for edible applications. The analysis of solo and integrated extraction strategies from marine macroalgae listed so far are dealt with in detail. Along with their food industry applications, we have also investigated the possible influence of contaminants and co-precipitants on their nutritional quality and performance. The effect of extraction processes and various enrichment protocols are also summarized. Due to the paucity of literature in this subject area, the discussion section deals mostly with future perspectives.
