Leprosy and Buruli Ulcer

Abstract

It is useful to investigate the source of Mycobacterium leprae infection. It is very important in those countries where leprosy is only an “imported” disease. Anamnesis must clarify the onset of skin clinical aspect, which could be insidious or acute. Aspecific signs can be interpreted only after the appearance of specific signs of the disease. Itching should not be considered as a subjective symptom of leprosy, since dermal nerve bundles are destroyed by the disease. However, occasional localized itching may precede cutaneous onset of type 1 reaction.
