Abstract

Paediatric liver transplantation (LT) accounts for 10% of all hepatic transplants and is now considered the gold standard treatment for children affected by life-threatening, not otherwise curable hepatic disorders without age limits. In the last few decades, LT has become one of the most successful paediatric transplant programs, with an overall patient survival of 95%, 88% and 75% at 1, 5 and 10 years after surgery, respectively. The main indications for paediatric LT are chronic liver disorders and related complications, acute liver failure, primitive hepatic tumours, genetic-metabolic diseases and re-transplantation. Eligibility criteria, outcomes and prognostic factors for each indication as well as contraindications to LT are discussed in the chapter with particular regard to paediatric-specific peculiarities.
