Abstract

Aesthetic surgery is a branch of plastic surgery which aims to modify and improve, from an aesthetic perspective, different areas of the human body through targeted surgical procedures. Common surgical procedures include augmentation or reduction mammoplasty, mastopexy, gynecomastia correction, rhinoplasty, liposuction, abdominoplasty, thighplasty, brachioplasty, gluteoplasty, facelift, lipofilling, blepharoplasty, and otoplasty. Many patients seek surgical treatments to correct genetic defects or to reverse changes that occur with aging. Great importance is given to procedures able to treat problems that influence the personal and social life of the individual, otherwise perfectly healthy from the physical and psychical perspectives. The causes that motivate patients to undergo an aesthetic surgery procedure may be objectively definable, in presence of real deviations from the common aesthetic standards, or being perceived only subjectively, in cases when these deviations are softer. The precondition for every aesthetic surgery intervention is the evaluation of the patient’s psychological state. The indication is then decided on the basis of an objective and strictly surgical analysis of the possibilities of improvement offered by the therapy.
