Abstract
The rapid process of population aging has brought economic, social, and psychological consequences to both central and peripheral countries. This topic has been discussed in light of the sustainability of pension payments, recent changes caused by reforms to social security systems, and the positive or negative consequences that retirement can entail both for organizations and for workers and retirees. Despite recent contributions, there is a scarcity of studies focusing on the instruments available to measure the decision-making process surrounding retirement, with regard to their theoretical robustness, their validation for different cultures, and their applicability to organizations and other contexts. This chapter will draw together and review the literature on instruments that measure the decision-making process surrounding retirement, highlighting those that focus on intentions, interests, attitudes, and decisions in retirement and predictors of this decision. An overview of the existing instruments will describe ten measurement instruments, classify predictors in dimensions, and compile a list of the items developed and used by the authors. We hope to offer professionals in the field methods for assessing workers as they approach retirement, providing measures that enrich their understanding of the circumstances faced by retirees in various contexts.
