Abstract

In this chapter, the status and promise of positive psychology in South Korea and Japan are reviewed. Specifically, for each country, the geographical, economic, and social context for positive psychology as well as the most prominent positive psychologists and their contributions are considered. Chapter sections also summarize various theoretical orientations, trends in research, assessment methodologies, and practice (e.g., promoting healthy well-being and happiness in the citizenry) related to the development of positive psychology in both nations. In the final section, the major issues and opportunities for the future of positive psychology in Korea and Japan are explored. Resources for further study are provided.

Sink and McMahan contributed to the Korea section and Karasawa, Hashimoto, and Jung wrote the Japanese section.
