Abstract

Total pancreatectomy is a major surgical procedure, with similar morbidity and mortality rates as compared to other major pancreatic resections. Potential advantages include the absence of a high-risk and prone to complications pancreatic anastomosis as well as a curative approach in diseases affecting the complete organ. The major drawback of the procedure is the loss of function, specifically of the endocrine function resulting in brittle diabetes mellitus. Indications for total pancreatectomy must be individualized and decided interdisciplinary, ensuring that the advantages outweigh its risks and that no other organ-preserving surgical procedures are possible.
