Abstract
Computer software can help scientists develop visual representations of their research, but the key to the effective communication of scientific concepts, data, and processes, is for scientists to approach the presentation of their research from the perspective of those who will be encountering it and who ask, “what do you want me to know?” and then state “show this to me in a way that I can understand it.” This paper explores the use of visual variables and of systems of visual organization in revealing the relationship between the intent and visual display of information in scientific figures.
