Abstract

Orchidaceae is one of the largest plant family. Its members are distributed worldwide, and many of them are used in traditional medicines for the treatment of different diseases. In the last few decades, phytoconstituents with great chemical diversity were isolated from several orchids, and a wide range of biological activities were detected either for crude extracts or for pure compounds. Among the isolated compounds, phenolic derivatives, especially stilbenoids and phenanthrenes, are the most important ones. In the plant kingdom, orchids are the best sources of phenanthrenes – around 400 components were isolated from 100 species. Investigation of the phenanthrene content of orchids can be contributed to place taxonomically questionable or rather controversial species into the proper genera. Pharmacological investigation of Orchidaceae phenanthrenes revealed that several compounds possess promising activities – mainly antiproliferative, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects. This chapter summarizes the isolated phenanthrenoids, their occurrence in Orchidaceae species, chemotaxonomical significances, and biological activities of the most promising representatives.
